Each year Western Isles Council spends around £400,000 to keep streets in the islands clean and tidy.
Now the Comhairle is to embark on a new anti-litter campaign which will cover the whole of the Western Isles, although initially the main target area will be Stornoway.
Councillor Norman Macdonald, Chair of the Environment and Protective Services Committee said: “In line with our Enforcement Policy, the Comhairle is initially carrying out a publicity campaign.
“This began with the presentation of information in the Vandalism Action Team Pack earlier this year to schools throughout the Islands. It will continue with further work with schools and other groups.”
He continued: “Officers from the Environmental Health Team, along with the Police will be encouraging people to put their litter in the bins provided.
“However, if people do not respond to requests to dispose of their waste appropriately, officers are able to issue fixed penalty notices resulting in a fine of £50.”
