HOW the prospect of leaving the European Union will impact on rural Scotland is tol be the subject of a panel discussion at a session of the Scottish Rural Parliament, which meets in Brechin next week (October 6-8).
The debate – chaired by well-known journalist and columnist, Ruth Wishart – will include Lewis Macdonald MSP, Cllr Mairi Evans MSP, National Farmers Union of Scotland representative Gerald Banks and Peter Chapman MSP.
Emma Cooper, co-ordinator of Scottish Rural Action, which organises the Parliament event, said that the post-brexit situation raised so many potentially serious issues for Scotland’s rural communities that it was felt it would not be right for the rural parliament not to have the topic on its agenda.
She added: “An important ingredient of any situation is how people on the ground view it. After all, they are the people who ultimately will be affected. I would hope that our discussions and outcomes will help inform the wider, even the national, debate”.
