Western Isles Libraries is holding a series of events for Book Week Scotland 2015 (23 – 29 November).
Book Week Scotland is a national celebration of books and reading that brings hundreds of free events to a variety of venues across the country.
The theme for Book Week Scotland 2015 is transformation and throughout the week we will be celebrating the powerful and positive impact that books can have on people’s lives.
Libraries across the isles will be holding events aimed at encouraging everyone in the community to tap into their creative side and try something new. There will be drop-in sessions, where people will get the opportunity to see and try out a range of new crafts and activities, including weaving, knot-tying, foraging and pot-painting.
Renowned designer and needleworker, Alice Starmore, will be giving a talk at Stornoway Library on her work, travels and designs and Liniclate Library will feature seaweed cookery expert and forager, Fiona Bird. We will also be lucky enough to have Rosie Wiscombe of By Rosie, hold a drop-in workshop on creating tweed bookmarks, and for the children and families, there will be ‘Paint-a-Pot session as well.
Library events will also be happening beyond the library walls, with a special social storytelling evening at the Harris Distillery, with Ian Stephen. Ian will be telling some local tales and members of the audience will be invited to share their yarns as well.
Everyone is invited to attend a talk or pop in to one of the open sessions to discover how books and reading can transform lives by helping everyone discover something new and inspire creativity.
For those who have an interest in discovering a range of Scottish voices, libraries will also be handing out free copies of a short story and poem collection written by ordinary Scottish people, Journeys.
In addition to this, three free picture books will be gifted to every Primary 1 pupil in the Western Isles. The Bookbug P1 Family Bag, in Gaelic and English, was produced in conjunction with Education Scotland and the Scottish Government as part of Read, Write, Count. The books comprise the shortlist for the Scottish Children’s Book Awards 2016: Never Tickle a Tiger by Pamela Butchart and Marc Boutavant (Bloomsbury); Wanted! Ralfy Rabbit Book Burglar by Emily MacKenzie (Bloomsbury); Mouse’s First Night at Moonlight School by Simon Puttock and Ali Pye (Nosy Crow).
Libraries are already real centres of the community – with reading and craft groups meeting regularly. Book Week Scotland 2015 is the perfect time for you to re-discover your local library or sign up to become a library member. And if you can’t make it to a library, remember that the mobile library can always visit you.
