An exciting new project is being launched next Thursday 1st October at Inverness Library.
The Meet the Books project explores the Fraser Mackintosh collection of rare books, which contains c. 5000 volumes collected by Charles Fraser-Mackintosh (1828-1901) and is designed to raise awareness of the collection to the public, academics and students alike.
The project kicks off with a public workshop at Inverness Library from 11-12pm when Dr Kristin Lindfield-Ott (Inverness College UHI), the project organiser, shares her enthusiasm on books from the collection, and demonstrates why these books are so important.
This is the first in a series of planned hands-on workshops and takes a look at James Macpherson’s The Poems of Ossian. First published in the 1760s, these poems changed the course of literature – and of European culture. Everyone was fascinated by these works – from Samuel Johnson to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and from King George III to Napoleon.
Inverness Library has a number of first and early editions of these poems, and after a short introductory lecture the workshop will provide the opportunity to read, discuss, and learn about why people were so fascinated with these texts.
The Meet the Books project includes a blog, which will be updated weekly to highlight items from the collection to encourage people to use the books.
There will be an opportunity to get involved in blogging for members of the public. We would welcome contributions – two small paragraphs is all that is required! Photographs can also be provided to accompany the blog if necessary.
