Comhairle Will Work To Secure New Grid Connections

council-Hebrides-TodayResponding to SSE’s announcement that they are not able to accept new applications to the grid, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has said it will work with the company to find new and innovative solutions to enable connections to the grid until the new interconnector is in place in 2020.

Leader Angus Campbell said: “It is disappointing that we have reached this stage although I have to say that the Comhairle has been warning of this for years. We said a new HDVC line was required urgently and that physical capacity was running out on the outdated system. Sadly, this has now been confirmed. However we are where we are and we now need to look at ways that the grid can be used for existing users and new applicants. We will therefore work with SSE, developers and other stakeholders on a working group to examine the available options. It is important that the Steering Group also works with local businesses, who are involved in the micro-renewables sector.  Ways have to be found to assist and facilitate grid connections for individuals and businesses who have applications and plans in place.  It is essential that projects already in development are prioritised to safeguard jobs and investment in the Outer Hebrides.”
