MACNEIL WELCOMES CANAVAN STATEMENT SUPPORTING SNP VOTE TOMORROW

Angus-MacNeil-MP-Hebrides-TAngus MacNeil SNP, Na h-Eileanan an Iar has welcomed the endorsement of former Labour MP and Independent MSP Dennis Canavan in the General Election.

Mr Canavan stated that he believes that the majority of the people of Scotland want a left-of-centre government, combining a sound economy with higher standards of social justice rather than the continuing austerity offered by the main parties at Westminster.

In his statement, Mr Canavan said:

“Many traditional Labour voters have been sickened by the sight of Labour in bed with the Tories and not just during the Referendum Campaign. Labour is also in cahoots with the Tories by supporting the benefit cap and more savage cuts in essential services while spending billions of pounds on weapons of mass destruction like Trident.

“Labour was left without a shred of credibility when branch manager Jim Murphy tried to tell us there would be no more cuts in Scotland but was then slapped down by his party bosses in London.

“Although I do not endorse every aspect of SNP policy, I am asking people to vote SNP in this General Election because all the unionist parties have lost the plot and are completely out of touch with the people of Scotland.

“A strong SNP team in the House of Commons would shake up the Westminster Establishment and put pressure on other parties to build a fairer society in Scotland and throughout the UK. It might even help Labour to rediscover its long lost soul.”

Commenting Angus MacNeil said:

“Dennis Canavan is a well-respected former Labour MP, and I welcome his comments.

“Many former Labour voters are telling me that they believe that only a strong group of SNP MPs at Westminster will bring about change and apply pressure to bring an end to the austerity culture prevailing at Westminster – that is why people are using their votes with the SNP.
