CIVIL ENGINEERING CRISIS LOOMING WARNS MORRISON

Alasdair MorrisonEvery public agency in the islands should be concerned about the “crisis that’s about to hit island based civil engineering companies”  according to parliamentary candidate, Alasdair Morrison.

Speaking at the headquarters of D. MacKay and Sons Ltd at Parkend Industrial Estate Stornoway, Alasdair Morrison said:
“For years, civil engineering companies in the islands have been at the forefront of developments, improving our infra-structure and were major employers in the local economy. Sadly, the industry is now facing a crisis not of its own making. It is clear that the failure of politicians to secure capital funding for island projects is going to lead to a further reduction in the numbers employed by island based civil engineering companies.  Some companies have already paid off employees and further contraction is imminent unless the Scottish Government, Scottish Water and a host of other public bodies responsible for investing taxpayers money bring forward planned expenditure. The neglect must end and we need the Scottish Government to focus on its responsibilities, and do so in conjunction with local companies. Our islands need a serious and concerted approach to economic development. It’s clear the present arrangements are not working”.
“I found today’s discussion with respected and hard working civil engineers depressing – and it had a familiar ring to it: neglect. They’ve been neglected and their pressing needs have been forgotten. Our Parliamentarians neglect hits our friends, neighbours and communities. As a Parliamentary candidate I can only highlight their plight – but if I am elected to represent these islands I will give a real focus and impetus to economic development. We need action and our communities and people rightly expect those in elected office put their interest before any other concern”.
