Joint Operation “Monarda” to tackle Doorstep Crime

councilHebrides-TodayTrading Standards at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar will be carrying out joint visits in the Western Isles this week, along with Police Scotland, as part of Operation “Monarda” tackling doorstep crime and highlighting the need for consumers to be wary when dealing with doorstep sellers offering various services and products.

A spokesperson said, “We would always advise not to sign any documentation or hand over cash to door to door salesmen. These sellers often use high pressure sales techniques and it can be difficult to get them to leave. It can also be very difficult to get a refund if services or products are unsatisfactory or if the seller has left the Islands. Watch out for elderly neighbours and if you have any concerns contact Trading Standards on 01851 822694 or Faire on 01851 701702 (out of office hours) or in an emergency, the police on 101.”

A checklist has been drafted to help consumers should they wish to report any doorstep sellers:

Information that would be helpful to get or to have to hand if reporting an incident:

Date & Time of Visit:
The Callers Name:
Organisation/Trading Name and Address:
Callers Description:
Vehicle Make and Registration Details:
What reason they gave for calling on you:
What they were offering to do:
How much it was going to cost:
Any other suspicious activity:

The public are also reminded that they can stop cold callers by displaying a ‘‘No Uninvited Sales People’’ sign. Info and signage can be downloaded and printed off from CNES site.
