ROYAL VISIT TO STORNOWAY AND BARRA

A warm Hebridean welcome awaits Their Royal Highnesses The Earl and Countess of Wessex when they visit Stornoway on Tuesday 20 May.

The Earl of Wessex is visiting the Hebrides in his capacity as Lord High Commissioner, HM The Queen’s representative to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.  It is customary for the Lord High Commissioner to undertake visits to organisations and bodies representing different aspects of Scottish life and this year, in addition to Lewis and Barra, the week-long programme will also include visits to Dumfries and Galloway and Moray and Banffshire.  The Earl and Countess will also undertake engagements in Edinburgh.

During the visit to Stornoway, The Earl and Countess will officially open The Shed, a newly completed youth and family community centre at the rear of Martin’s Memorial Church and visit the Town Hall where they will meet participants and volunteers of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, of which The Earl is a Trustee, as well as visiting the Harris Tweed Authority and meeting representatives of the Stornoway Historical Society.

The Army and Air Cadets will form a guard of honour to welcome the Royal couple to their last engagement in Stornoway at the Drill Hall where they will meet representatives of the Western Isles Guiding and Brownies, the Scouts, Beavers and Cubs, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Royal National Mission for Deep Sea Fishermen and the Stornoway Branch of the British Legion.

The Earl and Countess will then continue their visit to the Hebrides with an engagement in Castlebay on Barra where they will meet representatives of several local youth and community groups including the Children’s Centre, Young Crofter Initiative, Buth Bharraigh, Garradh a Bhagh a’ Tuath, Voluntary Action Barra and Vatersay, The Hebridean Living Project, Comunn Eachdraidh Bharraigh ’s Bhatarsaigh.
