Transport Chair Welcomes return of Isle of Lewis But Calls For Suitable Contingency Vessel

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Chair of Transportation has welcomed the news that the Isle of Lewis ferry has been repaired but has again appealed to Cal-mac to have an appropriate back up vessel for contingency situations.

Cllr John Mackay said: “While it is good news that the Isle of Lewis has been repaired, there really needs to be a suitable replacement vessel on hand for when there are technical problems, which will happen from time to time. Using the Isle of Arran, as has happened the last two times there has been a breakdown is not an acceptable solution for what is one of the busiest routes in the Cal-Mac network. It is too small and too slow for the numbers using this route and I would call on Cal-mac to carefully consider future contingency plans”.
