Design Awards for the Hebrides

The Comhairle recently recognised outstanding achievements in new building design at its inaugural Design Awards event held last week in the resplendentStornoway Town Hall.

The evening was hosted by Cllr Norman A. MacDonald, then Chair of the Comhairle’s Environment and Protective Services Committee, with awards presented by Cllr Angus McCormack, Comhairle Design Champion.  Cllr McCormack commented that “all of the properties we have awarded tonight deserve celebration and we will continue that celebration in the years to come to ensure that the work of those gathered here tonight is recognised and repeated.”

Top awards went to buildings in Ness, Harris, North Uist and the West Side.  The winners were: Taigh Eilidh, 13A Port of Ness, Fir Chlis, 12 Seilibost, Isle of Harris, 15 Trealigarry, Berneray, Borve Lodge Self-Catering, Borve Estate, Isle of Harris, Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn, Tom na Ba, Galson, 4 & 4A GearrannanBlackhouse Village.

In closing the prestigious event, Cllr Macdonald thanked all those who had submitted applications to the awards and said that “the job of choosing the top awards was tough and that was testament to the high quality of the submissions.  However, all those receiving awards should see themselves as outstanding.”

 

The awards ceremony signals that the Comhairle is serious about recognising good design in new developments and that the planning of new houses, in particular, needs careful consideration for the future.
