Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MSP Alasdair Allan has today written to the Chief Secretary to the Treasury at the UK Government Danny Alexander, asking why they are putting obstacles in the way of getting a Rural Fuel Duty cut implemented, as was announced by Mr Alexander in October 2010. The present proposals where filling stations will have to wait for up to 2 months to get the refund from the Treasury is unworkable for all small fuel retailers.
Mr Allan commented:
“When Danny Alexander made the announcement about the fuel duty cut last October, it was expected that the scheme would be up and running 11 months later, we are now being told that fuel station operators are saying the scheme is unworkable for them, and puts in serious doubt the scheme getting off the ground if it does not have the support of the filling stations.
“Rural Filling stations work under very tight cash restraints at the moment, and to expect them to have to wait 2 months for payment under the scheme is simply not acceptable.
“I have written to Danny Alexander about the matter and have asked him that a reasonable solution is found to make the scheme workable for suppliers, and to ensure that the fuel duty cut is implemented as soon as possible. Where there’s a will there’s a way and I know that a solution can be found, so that many drivers in rural areas will get the fuel discount that is much needed.”
