A new Gaelic and English dictionary covering the professional language of local government and business has been launched on the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar website. Containing over 7,500 headwords, the new dictionary has been produced by the European Language Initiative (TELI) in collaboration with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and The Highland Council.
The dictionary can be accessed on the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar website (www.cne-siar.gov.uk/gaelic/dictionary.asp) and is available in e-book and PDF formats, free of charge.
Chair of Comataidh Buileachaidh Plana Cànain at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Agnes Rennie, said:
“Comhairle nan Eilean Siar warmly welcomes the online publication of this important new dictionary. The Comhairle has long been one of the foremost bodies in determining the appropriate usage of Gaelic in official situations and it’s good that our officers have been able to work collaboratively with TELI and the Highland Council to share their combined knowledge in this way.
We hope that the dictionary will be used widely. As well as its obvious benefit to local authorities, businesses and schools will also find it very useful as will members of the public. This dictionary marks another milestone in delivering the best quality services through the Gaelic language at Local Authority Level.”
