Comhairle nan Eilean Siar are warning islanders of a scam letter that is being sent to households. The letter is being sent to specific addresses within the Western Isles, claiming to be in reference to the estate of a deceased relative with the same surname as the householder.
The letter claims to be in reference to a man named Gilbert, and depending on what the surname of the addressee is, substitutes this man’s surname for that. For instance, if your surname is Mackinnon, the letter will state that its ‘subject matter’ is ‘Gilbert Mackinnon’. The letter purports to be from a Dong Li, from Wing Hang Bank Limited in Hong Kong. It claims that its subject was involved in an accident in China and that the addressee is his next of kin and therefore due to a share of $9.8 million.
Householders who receive this letter are advised to dispose of it as it is a scam designed to extract money from its recipient
