Over half the direct and indirect spend on work at the new Balivanich School has gone to local companies.
It is likely that the spend pattern of 54% to local companies will be similar for work on Daliburgh School because of the significant reliance on the local supply chain in the Uists.
That would mean over £8m will be going into the local Uist economy as a result of the schools project.
Last week the Comhairle agreed to allocate additional funding to enable the new Daliburgh School to be part of the Western Isles Schools Project. The Comhairle is now building six new schools.
Comhairle Leader Angus Campbell said: “As well as providing an excellent educational facility for the area, in line with community wishes,. The alternative choice of going back to the Scottish Government would have resulted in a loss of classrooms, loss of gym and canteen and the loss of a full size pitch. We felt these were important for the community and have dug deep in difficult financial times to find the necessary funding. The construction phase will also provide a significant economic boost for the community. The figures for Balivanich show that local companies are benefiting considerably from the Schools Project and this trend is likely to continue with the work at Daliburgh”.
