Harris Tweed Skills and Training Awards Event

The award season is in full swing and next week’s hot ticket is the Harris Tweed Skills & Training Awards.

The event is being held on 24 February in Stornoway to celebrate the culmination of an ambitious EU funded programme, which has trained and accredited a grand total of 150 Harris Tweed weavers and mill employees since its establishment 18 months ago.

The Harris Tweed Skills & Training Project, funded by the European Social Fund (ESF), Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (CnES) and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), has surpassed its targets, boosting the potential for the Harris Tweed product in the global market place, encouraging new weavers into the industry and leading to sustainable growth of the cloth, in the centenary year of the iconic Orb and for future generations.

The event will be chaired by Angus Campbell, Leader of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and Chair of the Harris Tweed Industry Forum.  Leading industrialist, James Sugden, Director of Johnstons of Elgin, who was recently awarded an OBE for services to the textile industry, and Alex Paterson, Chief Executive of HIE, will also address the audience.  An industry update will be provided by the producers and the Weaver’s Association.
