Western Isles schools closure threat continues

Western Isles Council are not yet willing to let their school closure plans be brushed aside and despite the Scottish Governmnet ruling that primaries Seilebost and Carloway and Lionel and Shawbost S1/S2 should remain open the Local Authority is considering a Judicial Review of that decision.

Giving consideration to such a move was condemned by Harris Councillor Philip Maclean, who has written to Comhairle Leader Councillor Angus Campbell seeking clarification on the matter.

The Harris Councillor, who is particularly concerned about the future of Seilebost primary in his own constituency, said he was dismayed when he heard reports that the council was considering asking for a Judicial Review.

He added: “The Comhairle should do the decent thing and gracefully accept the Minister’s decision so that the community of West Harris can be allowed to flourish without the continued threat to its sustainability.”

In the meantime there was a special celebration in Carloway last night (Friday) to mark the news that the area’s primary school will remain open.
