Western Isles police station closures

The move to close 16 local police stations across the Highlands and Islands – including several in the Western Isles – was first mooted in November last year.

At the time the Northern Joint Police Board deferred taking a decision on the matter, however now Ian Latimer, chief constable of Northern Constabulary, has asked the board to agree to the move to help cut costs in advance of Friday’s meeting.

In some areas the plan is to share buildings with other public services and Northern Constabulary stress that closing stations would not reduce its presence.

Stations under threat in the Western Isles are Barvas, Carloway, Ness and Tarbert.  It has also been suggested that operating hours could be reduced at the main police station in Stornoway on Lewis.
