Angus Brendan MacNeil’s admission that he would do a deal with the Conservatives blows apart the SNP myth that a hung parliament would be good for Scotland , according to Labour’s Donald John MacSween.
On the BBC Alba debate on Tuesday evening Western Isles SNP candidate Angus Brendan MacNeil admitted he would be open to do a deal with the Tories over a fuel derogation for the islands.
The question that went unanswered is what would the SNP give the Tories in return for a penny off a litre of petrol?
Labour’s islands candidate Donald John MacSweeen said: “The mask slipped on television. The nationalists are ready to betray Scotland – Scottish jobs, Scottish public services, child tax credits – in a series of grubby little deals with David Cameron if the Tories sneak in as a minority government. ”
He added: “It is pretty clear now that the SNP and the Tories would be in an unholy alliance if it came to a Conservative minority government. Alex Salmond set out a shopping list at the beginning of the campaign and now Angus Brendan MacNeil has set the price for selling Western Isles votes to the Conservatives, and at a pretty low value. ”
“Angus Brendan MacNeil’s comments will be music to the ears of the Tories, if they are scrabbling around for friends on Friday morning. A vote for the SNP mean that the Tories would have their Cameron Highlanders to do their bidding in an Emergency Budget that would cut child tax credits, cut teachers, cut public sector jobs right across Scotland .”
He concluded: “Everyone wants to see lower fuel prices and if elected I will fight for this whoever is in government but I will not do any deals that keep the Tories in power at the expense of help to pensioners, the unemployed and working families.”
