NHS Western Isles provides grant to support local Breast Cancer Support Group

The Lewis and Harris Breast Cancer Support Group (LHBCSG) has received funding from NHS Western Isles to further enhance the supportive services it provides for local people affected by breast cancer.

NHS Western Isles Chief Executive Gordon Jamieson recently presented Trustees of the group with a cheque for £10,000 to support the invaluable work carried out by members. The LHBCSG has worked in partnership with NHS Western Isles over the years to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, to support health promotion initiatives and most recently to promote the national ‘Detect Cancer Early’ campaign.

Convenor of the Lewis and Harris Breast Cancer Support Group, Mary Macleod, stated: “On behalf of the LHBCSG, the Trustees would like to thank NHS Western Isles for the very generous sum of money granted to the group in order to further develop the services the group already provides for people going through the breast cancer journey. This money will now be used to implement health and wellbeing courses for those people and also to provide complementary therapy sessions on a monthly basis. Plans are already in place for this service.”

NHS Western Isles Chief Executive, Gordon Jamieson, said: “NHS Western Isles was delighted to be able to give this grant to the Lewis and Harris Breast Cancer Support Group. Members of the group have been continually enthusiastic and supportive of NHS breast cancer awareness campaigns and they have always been more than willing to work jointly with us to highlight important health and wellbeing messages to the public.

“The LHBCSG works side by side with NHS Western Isles to support people in the Western Isles affected by breast cancer and we hope that this grant will go some way towards enabling members to provide the services and support that they feel would be of benefit to local people affected by breast cancer.”

The LHBCSG continues to meet on a Thursday from 2pm – 4pm in the Lewis Retirement Centre on Bayhead, Stornoway. Anyone affected by breast cancer, including partners, friends and family members, are welcome to attend.
