Patients and carers in the Western Isles can find out useful information about patient travel by using the new Patient Travel WI website from NHS Western Isles - www.patienttravelwi.scot.nhs.uk
NHS Western Isles recognises that the diagnosis and treatment of a medical condition can be an anxious time for patients and their families. For some, travel to mainland hospitals for investigations or treatment will be necessary, and the additional uncertainty this presents can result in a number of questions.
With this in mind, the Patient Travel WI site has been designed to offer a wealth of useful information for those travelling to NHS appointments – whether their travel is inter-island or to the mainland.
The ‘Local Services’ section contains useful information and contact details. This includes local GP Surgeries, hospitals and clinics, and a range of local nursing services. A list of definitions and terms has also been included to explain common medical terms.
As well as information on how to access your local Patient Travel Offices, the ‘Travel’ section contains useful information to help patients and their carers arrange travel using the Scottish Ambulance Service’s patient transport service, access additional funding and grants for travel, as per the NHS Western Isles’ Patient Travel Policy guidance, and arrange escort travel where this is appropriate. Also included is information on wheelchair support, airport assistance, and overnight accommodation. Advice on what to do in the event of travel difficulties or when travel has been cancelled due to bad weather or technical issues is also available.
Links to local airports, as well as local and mainland ferry, bus and rail links have also been included on the new website atwww.patienttravelwi.scot.nhs.uk.
