Bòrd na Gàidhlig announces funding for 64 projects to increase Gaelic usage and acquisition

A wide range of over 60 projects were successful in receiving funding from Bòrd na Gàidhlig’s Gaelic Language Act Implementation Fund (GLAIF) 2012 – 2013.

Bòrd na Gàidhlig received a total of 74 different applications from Public Authorities for this year’s fund. Between the projects a total of £749,915 will be distributed to Public Bodies across the whole of Scotland.

The main purpose of GLAIF is to enhance the status of the Gaelic language in Scotland by supporting initiatives which develop the capacity of relevant Public Authorities to deliver their existing, or potential, Gaelic Language Plans, therefore supporting the aims of the National Gaelic Language Plan 2012-2017.

Welcoming the announcement, the Minister for Learning, Science and Scotland’s Languages, Dr Alasdair Allan said: “Local initiatives aimed at increasing both the use and the visibility of Gaelic are a vital part of our over-arching commitment to give the language a sustainable future in a modern Scotland. I am pleased to see the volume and variation of projects coming forward for funding and hope to see some of them in action soon.”

Head of Language Usage at Bòrd na Gàidhlig, David Boag said: “In order to translate the outcomes proposed in the second National Gaelic Language Plan into positive actions, it is vital that the Bòrd works in partnership with Public Authorities across Scotland in the delivery of projects.  The funding we provide via this scheme is a vital part of this partnership and we are delighted with the range and quality of applications received.  It is also encouraging to see the interest in the scheme growing and this can only be of benefit to our aim of growing the learning, use and visibility of Gaelic across Scotland.”

Amongst some of the projects receiving funding are; the Gaelic translation of NHS 24’s website, Parental Development Gaelic workshop in North Lanarkshire and Gaelic events in Aberdeen.
