Water supply issues across the Western Isles as result of thaw

The snow and ice receded today across the Western Isles however the rise in temperature has caused a flood of burst pipes across the region.

Scottish Water have issued a specific help service to help cope with the problems created by the sudden thaw.

In the Western Isles some businesses have had to close to deal with burst pipes issues and there has been reports of low pressure, discoloured water in South Uist and a burst main in Benbecula.

There has been concern raised over the increasing demand for water in Balallan and Arivruach on the Isle of Lewis and also on the Isle of Harris.

People are being urged to check out the Scottish Government website at www.scotland.gov.uk/thaw, which will provide information about what steps can be taken to protect themselves, their property and their families.
