The NHS is one of the few public organisations which has had its budgets safeguarded from government cuts.
However revelations in the national press this weekend have revealed that there are 3,000 fat cats each pocketing more than £100,000 a year, with more than 800 NHS workers earning more than Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond.
In the Western Isles it has been reported that the health authority employs 19 staff earning more than £100,000.
“Staff earning more”
The revelation comes as health boards across the country prepare to axe 4,000jobs.
Labour health spokeswoman Jackie Baillie questioned whether health boards could make savings by cutting the number of managers and reducing the salaries of top earners rather than cutting frontline staff.
A Scottish Government spokesperson stressed that is was “taking robust action” to rein in high NHS pay, saying that Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon had recently wrote to the chairs of NHS boards earlier this month asking them to confirm that their pay policies for all staff earning more.
