“Economy of the Hebrides”
Western Isles MP, and the SNP’s Transport Spokesperson, Angus MacNeil, has reacted with dismay to Labour’s latest attack on the economy of theHebrides. Labour fuel duty of 3p over the next year.
This means that since Dec 2008 fuel duty will have increased by 17% well above inflation in the 25 months to Jan 2011. By the end of the year the price of fuel in the islands will rocket to well over £1.30 a litre thanks to an uncaring Labour government.
Commenting Angus MacNeil said:
“Labour are at it again. This is an attack on jobs and livelihoods. Not content with getting more tax, on average out of every litre of fuel sold in the Western Isles they are trying to squeeze the pips further.
“Pain at the pumps”
“The AA estimates that the average cost of running a family car has increased by £52 per month in the last year, which means in the Western Isles it will be more. Labour has not listened to reasoned argument. Only a really dismal performance at the ballot box will show Labour what islanders really think of their fuel tax rises.
“Next week we will likely see Labour’s first increase in what can only be described as an economically damaging “April Fuel’s Day” – thanks to Labour.
“This unfair fuel tax is another example of an uncaring and out of touch government. We must make sure that while we feel the pain at the pumps Labour feel the pain at the ballot box.”
