Innovative partnership between local NHS and UHI

A unique new accredited online university module has been developed as a result of a training programme run by NHS Western Isles.

The course has been developed in partnership by NHS Western Isles and the University of the Highlands and Islands, after Dr Rachel Tearse (Programme Leader MA Health & Wellbeing, and Researcher Health & Wellbeing Research Unit, Lews Castle College/UHI) attended some local training delivered by the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

This was a two day introduction to Child and Adolescent Mental Health which has been delivered to nearly 150 local staff, carers and volunteers who work with children and young people.

Dr Tearse saw a real opportunity to create a new module addressing some of the key elements covered in the introductory training.  She then developed the module working closely with Emelin Collier, Planning and Development, NHS Western Isles, and Mike Sullivan, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, in order to provide a recognised and accredited course from the existing introductory training.

” Professionals in the 21st century”

Applications are now being invited from nurses, allied healthcare professionals and the social service workforce for the new online module Child & Adolescent Mental Health. The module starts in September 2010 and there are five sponsored places for NHS Western Isles staff. This module can be studied alone for CPD and/ or as part of the MA Health and Wellbeing available from UHI.

Emelin Collier said “This is a great opportunity to increase individual knowledge of Child and Adolescent Mental Health. People undertaking the course will find it interesting, informative and highly relevant to the current national drive to make promoting and responding to promoting positive mental health and well-being everyone’s business.”

The Masters programme has been developed to meet the changing needs of health and social care professionals in the 21st century and aims to help you develop your career into one that makes a real difference to the health and wellbeing of others.

The module is totally online and allows students to study flexibly from home or work. It is a 15 week module at SCQF level 10.
