“Derogation for the islands”
Commenting on local Labour and SNP politician’s recognition of the issues around fuel price increases local Liberal Democrat PPC Jean Davis said.
‘I am pleased to see the recent press reports and welcome the fact that this issue has now entered their radar.’
‘I would like to remind residents that the Liberal Democrats have been assiduously working on this issue for some time.’
‘George Lyon MEP has ascertained that fuel derogation for the islands is within EU law and has been implemented elsewhere in Europe.
There has already been a debate in Parliament, well attended by many rural MPs, achieved by Lib Dem Island MP Alistair Carmichael following which the relevant UK government minister agreed to look into the issue.’
‘I am pleased that Angus MacNeil is now aware of the issue but I do have to ask again where his colleagues were when this issue was debated as there was no SNP representation at this vitally important debate.’
“A European precedent”
‘Donald John MacSween’s assertion that ‘we’ve got to approach the problem in a systematic way’ and that ‘something could be won if we go along the same lines as RET ‘, suggests a lack of urgency and the possibility of yet another kick into the long grass. He surely is best placed to reinforce the case for derogation to his own Minister. We know his Party are reluctant to vary taxation in geographical areas but there is a strong case and a European precedent for island communities.’
‘Something will be won and it is the Liberal Democrats who will win it not politicians looking for publicity weeks after the Parliamentary debate.’
