After having been contacted by Harris Tweed Textiles, Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MP Angus MacNeil, commented on news that Dr Who is to wear a Harris Tweed jacket in the upcoming series.
“Harris Tweed Textiles “
Angus MacNeil said:
This is exciting news for Harris Tweed and the endorsement by Dr Who shows that Harris Tweed is timeless and can be worn anytime, at any age and in any galaxy.
This exposure represents a serious opportunity for Harris Tweed. We must ensure that government and public bodies are ready to help the tweed industry capitalise on any resulting opportunities from this exposure. A marketing campaign to generate equivalent interest would cost millions of pounds, there is a strong chance that we need to be ready for a dramatic rise in orders.
Today I have been contacted by the owner of the Harris Tweed Textiles Mill in Carloway, Mr Derek Reid, who feels that this represents a great opportunity but points out that the industry would need wider support if Dr Who leads to a rapid increase in demand.
I congratulate Ann MacCallum of Harris Tweed Textiles, Lorna MacAulay of the Harris Tweed Authority for their efforts in ensuring the continued success of the timeless Harris Tweed.
