The Education Committee of Western Isles Council has agreed to go out to formal consultation in relation to the proposed closure of Cross and Stoneybridge Schools and the proposed discontinuation of S1/S2 education at Daliburgh School.
The Committee also agreed a programme of informal community conversations in 2010 on schools amalgamations covering 14 primary schools and three other S1/S2 schools.
The Comhairle is planning to start work on five new schools this summer which will provide new facilities for 40% of the school population.
However, falling school rolls, tightening financial settlements, the poor conditions of many school buildings and the under-capacity of the current estate has led to a general review of Educational provision in the islands.
In addition, the Comhairle is of the view that S1/S2 departments are not resourced, equipped or staffed to deliver the fourth level of Curriculum for Excellence.
The Comhairle is aiming for a model of Community Learning Areas in new or much improved school buildings.
Education and Children’s Services Chair Morag Munro, said:
“We face severe challenges in delivering education in the Islands but we are meeting those challenges head on and are proceeding with plans to deliver the best possible education for our children and young people in the best possible facilities. I understand the concerns that some in our communities may have and I would encourage them to participate in the forthcoming dialogues. They can be assured that they will be listened to. This is not just about education but about all the services that the Comhairle delivers and the impact of increasing pressures on budgets. However, I genuinely believe that there really is an opportunity over the next few years to improve educational provision in the islands”.
