Harris musical event hailed a success

Leverhulme Memorial School in Harris was the venue for a music event for young people from across the Western Isles on Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th of February 2010.

Organised by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Cultural Co-ordinator Service, workshops in Samba and violin/fiddle were enjoyed by a group of thirty youngsters.

Roddy Dickson, director of Sambayabamba and Mike Vass from the group Malinky led workshops culminating in a short performance on Saturday evening.  One parent commented:

“It’s really great to see young people coming together from all over the islands” Workshops which aimed to boost young people’s skills and motivation were also helped and supported by local tutors. Duncan Johnston, a violin tutor from Barra commented:

“The event went really well and will help my job as a teacher”

Christine Hurley, a music teacher from Sir E Scott secondary school agreed, by saying:

“You can really tell the difference when young people have had the practical experience of making music”.

The young people unanimously agreed they would like to do the same again next year.
