The BBC Trust’s review of BBC Alba was debated in the Scottish Parliament today. Following unanimous agreement of the motion (as amended), the Minister for Gaelic Fiona Hyslop said:
“Today’s unanimous vote demonstrates that there continues to be cross-party consensus on Gaelic broadcasting. There is agreement that BBC Alba has been a tremendous success, that it should be available to the widest possible audience and that the BBC Trust should take that decision sooner rather than later.
“It is important that this Parliament sends a strong message to the BBC Trust about its unanimous support for Freeview access to BBC Alba. That is why I have already written to the Trust, highlighting the strength of feeling expressed in today’s debate and urging it to make the right decision for Gaelic and for Scotland.
“I will also be writing again to Virgin Media, reiterating the need for it to find a way work with the BBC to ensure the channel is also made available on cable services as soon as possible.”
