Model view of stornoway town hall

Stornoway town hall campaigners have welcomed the recent release of a computer generated model by the council which illustrates their proposals .

The proposals include the demolition of the historic stage and levelling off of the floor in the seating gallery and inserting a ramp across the curved balcony with plastic barriers to segregrate them from the former hall.

Campaigner Amanda Darling said “Whilst I welcome the council making the 3D model to inform the public of their proposals, I am alarmed that it is too little, too late.

If the council had consulted the public properly this animation would have been made available a long time before the planning application was submitted by the council.”

“However I urge people who are concerned or interested about the proposals to view this animation and get a fresh idea as to the council’s intentions with the town hall.

The video highlights our concerns regarding the destruction of the historic fabric of this culturally significant building.”

“It also throws into sharp relief questions over the thinking behind the new plans for the hall itself. We see in the animation a series of cubes move about to form a temporary stage; however with the storage under the current stage gone, where do the seats and tables get kept?”

“I do not think the council have properly thought this through; the tempory stage is nothing more than a flimsy gesture in memory of the superb stage we know.”

“The new glazing to be inserted into the west elevation looks clumsy, especially with the brick mullions to prop them up. This will scar the external appearance of the building.”

“The proposal for the seating gallery is brutal and unnecessary.”

“I urge people concerned about these proposals to formerly object immediately to this planning application.

There are two town hall applications on the councils planning portal webpage which can both be objected to.”

“This is not a restoration project, it is a destruction project.”
