The Western Isles attracted a substantial increase in visitor numbers this year, especially in regards to its historic attractions and ancient churches such as St Moluag’s church (Teampull Mholuaidh) in Ness and St Clements Church, Harris.
Figures compiled by Glasgow Caledonian University for VisitScotland recorded a 12.% rise for the Western Isles and 11.3% for the Highlands.
The figures confirm the 100% increase in ferry traffic to the islands which was reported by Caledonian MacBrayne last month and is good news for strengthening tourist industry jobs in the region, especially given the axe hovering over 125 MoD jobs in the Southern Isles.
