Wildlife enthusiasts were in their element on Wednesday on board the Isle of Lewis ferry from Stornoway to Ullapool, as a team of wildlife experts were on hand throughout the day to inform the public of the marine animals and bird-life that could be spotted from the deck.
A story-teller entertained the children and SNH representatives, who organised the ‘Wildlife Adventure’, handed out activity packs with fun tasks, a competition and information to engage young minds.
Meanwhile parents and grand parents enjoyed hearing about the wildlife, such as gannets the largest sea bird in the region, with its distinctive black-tipped wings, which is regularly spotted hovering over and diving into the water ‘fishing’ for its supper.
And also about seals and porpoises which were also spotted during the trip.
The ‘Wildlife Adventure’ was the first of its kind on the ferry but going by the number of children listening to story-teller, Bob Pegg’s tales of Mermaids and cave dwellers making music from stones, as well as the numbers up on deck buttoned up against the buffeting breeze with their binoculars trained over the water, perhaps these adventures will become a regular feature on the summer calendar.
