ISLAND MP Angus MacNeil is asking that Barra and Vatersay be added to the schedule of Chief Veterinary Officer for Scotland, Charles Milne when he travels to the Western Isles in March to talk to crofters about the Bluetongue vaccination programme.

Public meetings on the issue, which Mr Milne will attend, have already been organised for Stornoway and Benbecula on March 30 and 31.

Mr MacNeil said: “Many people are sceptical about Bluetongue, and many crofters want an easier life than having to spend time and money on vaccinating animals.

“I am one of the crofters involved in this, and while I am glad that he is coming to the islands, I find it disappointing that Charles Milne, as yet, does not seem to be holding one of these meetings in Barra and Vatersay.

“I will be writing to Charles Milne as a matter of urgency asking him if he would also hold a meeting for the crofters in Barra and Vatersay regarding Bluetongue, particularly as people I speak to are yet to be convinced on the necessity of a vaccine in the islands.”

Mr Milne tried to allay crofters concerns over the vaccination programme earlier this month by writing an open letter to regional newspapers highlighting the reasons behind the programme and its benefits.

In the meantime island crofters are hoping to gain an extension on the Bluetongue deadline which instructs that all animals must be vaccinated by the end of April.
